Have you ever wondered why one scene works and another doesn’t?
What are the invisible rules that grab the audience and keep them on the edge of their seats?
Do you have an idea for a show but don’t know how to develop it or where to begin?
This workshop is designed to provide concrete answers to these questions.
For an entire week, Paolo Nani will be your creative assistant, consultant, director, sparring partner, and more!
WORKSHOP PROGRAM
The work is structured in three parts:
PART 1 – EXERCISES
Exercises that challenge and stretch our usual “selves”
- Exploring intentions
- The actor’s inner world
- What is revealed through the eyes
- Becoming “transparent” down to the smallest detail
PART 2 – STUDYING THE RULES
This phase focuses on the principles that make a scene work. It includes:
THE DRAMATURGICAL GAME
- Why does a scene work—or not?
- What rules make it compelling and engaging?
- Study of theatrical games, improvisation, and activities to uncover the invisible mechanics of a scene
TIMING
- The art of holding attention
- Learning tools to master the pace of a scene and maintain a vibrant connection with the audience
STYLE
- Identifying and blending genres
- Viewing a selection of videos—from Pina Bausch to Ice Age, from Shakespeare to Shrek—with a focus on style
- Creating new styles by mixing existing ones
PART 3 – SCENE CREATION: THE CREATIVE PROCESS
What inspires me? How can I turn that into a scene?
In this final phase, Paolo Nani works closely with participants, offering his guidance and experience to support the creation of individual and group scenes.
- Scenes can be proposed by participants or emerge during the workshop
- Work is developed collaboratively with Paolo’s support
- The goal is to train your ability to build scenes with a clear dramaturgical game, a coherent style, and a timing that matches the chosen aesthetic
- Inspiration may come from an image, a story, a theatrical idea, a photo, music, a character, or a video
🎬 TAKE YOUR SCENES HOME
Scenes developed during the workshop will be recorded and shared with participants as mp4 video files.
